Bod Pod Testing

Bod Pod Testing

About the Bod Pod

The BOD POD is the world’s only Air Displacement Plethysmography (ADP) system using whole body densitometric principles to determine body composition (Fat and Fat-Free Mass) in adults and children. In comparison to other body composition assessment methods, the BOD POD has eliminated the invasiveness of Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) as well as the difficulties associated with underwater submersion in hydrostatic weighing. A full test requires only about 5 minutes, and provides highly accurate, safe, comfortable, and fast test results. This is why the BOD POD is considered the practical Gold Standard for body composition assessment.

The BOD POD is a complete system based on the same Gold Standard operating principle as hydrostatic (underwater) weighing. The BOD POD uses the principles of whole body densitometry to determine body composition. This technique relies on a mass measurement from a highly accurate scale and a volume measurement from the BOD POD chamber. Once body density (Density = Mass/Volume) is determined, the BOD POD predicts Thoracic Gas Volume (TGV) and then uses known densitometric equations to calculate percent Fat and Fat-Free Mass.

Why do a Bod Pod Test:
  • Help to identify health risks.
  • Track changes in body composition that can’t be measured by weight alone.
  • Personalize your diet and/or exercise based on your results and goals.
  • Fast test time (2 minutes inside BOD POD and about 5 minutes total test time).
  •  Safe, non-invasive, and ideally suited
    for frequent testing.
Who else uses the Bod Pod:
  • Academic and Medical Research
  • Clinical Examination
  • Elite Athletic Training,  including many NFL teams
  • Used at the NFL combine
  • Military and Public Safety

TESTING PROCESS

Pre-test Requirements

In order to have the best possible results, follow these simple instructions:

  • No food, drink or exercise at least 2 hours prior to testing.
  • Use the restroom before testing, if necessary.
  • Men: Wear lycra/spandex-type swimsuit or single-layer compression shorts.
  • Women: Wear Lycra/spandex-type swimsuit or shorts and sports bra (no wire or padding).
  • A swim cap will be provided to compress any air pockets within the hair.

Testing Process

In order to have the best possible results, follow these simple instructions:

  • The operator will enter subjects information into the kiosk (i.e. age, height, ect.).
  • The subject will step on the calibrated scale to collect a mass measurement.
  • The subject will then sit in the Bod Pod for three 40 second volume measurements.
  • Results will then be sent to the kiosk and printed.
